BuildOps and GWI Open Doors to Six-Figure Careers for Young Women

Construction is a $2.2 trillion industry in the U.S. Yet women make up just 8.5% of construction managers.

This staggering statistic highlights why BuildOps, a technology company serving the commercial contracting industry, partnered with Girls With Impact to introduce students from Los Angeles Community College to career opportunities across the building and contracting industry, including six-figure career paths in product development, marketing, and employee learning.

The October 29 event featured BuildOps leaders Arpi Mardirossian, Senior Product Designer; Abby Rodriguez, Learning & Development Partner; and Celia Cummiskey, Content Marketing Manager.

“We have a labor shortage in the building and trades industry,” said Cummiskey. “That's why we're so excited to be here, encouraging young women to get started today and consider a career with us and the building community.”

The panelists shared their career experiences and advice for entering the workforce. A common theme was that no one’s career was linear. Each found opportunities they hadn't originally planned or expected.

Five Takeaways from The BuildOps Panel

  1. Seek informational interviews. Talking with professionals is a great way to explore career options, practice interviewing, and build relationships.

  2. Don't overlook opportunities to gain experience. Volunteer projects and other hands-on work can help build skills, make connections, and lead to recommendations.

  3. Stay curious. Ask questions, take an interest in what others do, and learn about careers you may not have considered.

  4. Try something new. Don't rule out an opportunity because it's unfamiliar or outside your original plans.

  5. Invest in your skills and network. Girls With Impact's Innovation Academy and Career Accelerator help young women develop business skills, build confidence, and connect with a supportive community.

“Young women need opportunities to see what's possible and meet the people who can help them get there,” said Jennifer Openshaw, Founder and CEO of Girls With Impact. “Partners like BuildOps help us connect business education with real career opportunities, giving students the confidence and connections to take their next step.”

Girls With Impact prepares young women ages 14–24 to lead, build, and succeed in business and beyond through tuition-free programs. Partnerships with employers like BuildOps give young women from low- and moderate-income backgrounds the opportunity to explore careers and connect with industry professionals.
